Then they clarified the reason for the obligation of reliance by their saying: "And what is there for us not to rely upon Allah," meaning the Lord of Glory and Honor. "While He has guided us to our paths," so He has clarified for us everything we do and everything we abandon. There is no escape for us from any of that. So let us certainly carry out all of His commands, and let us certainly refrain from all of His prohibitions. "And let us certainly be patient," they emphasized the denial that the Messenger - despite his solitude - would be patient against their harm, despite their multitude and strength. "Regarding what," and he expressed it in the past tense as an indication that they had forgiven him for their harm in the past, so they would not be punished for it. This is a call to the repentance of those who harm. They refrained from the present tense because they are waiting for Allah's command [in the future, for He may command them] with jihad or He may command them with patience. He said: "You have harmed us," meaning in that which we were commanded with, whatever it may be, for we relied upon Allah and we do not accuse Him in His decree. "And upon Allah," meaning the One who possesses all attributes of perfection alone. "So let those who rely rely," those who have realized their own inability, whether they are believers or not. They entrusted a matter of their affairs to others to suffice them with it, for He is encompassing in knowledge, fully capable, and everyone besides Him is incapable. Patience is the key to relief, and the source of absolute goodness from distress. [And the truth] must prevail and dominate, and falsehood must become defeated and subdued, even if the trial is prolonged.
