Commentary
'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' who is unique in perfection, and is exalted above having an equal or a likeness. 'The Most Gracious' for all His creation with a Book that is the ultimate in clarity. 'The Most Merciful' who has chosen from His servants those whom He has bound with the spirit of His love. The aim of the surah is the oneness of Allah, and to clarify that this Book is the ultimate message to Allah, for it is sufficient in clarifying the straight path that leads to Him. It conveys - with what it contains of secrets - to creation from one state to another, as indicated by the letter 'R'. The clearest evidence of this intention is the story of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him. As for the oneness of Allah, it is clear. As for the matter of the Book, it is part of his supplication for his offspring, whom he settled near the Sacred House from the descendants of Ismail, blessings be upon him. 'Our Lord, and send among them a Messenger from them who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them' [Al-Baqarah: 129]. When the thunder concluded that there is no testimony that can match a testimony from Him, the knowledge of the Book is an indication that the Book is the witness of its miraculous nature with its eloquence and what it contains of (p-370) various sciences. It was brought in that context defined as what was previously mentioned in Al-Baqarah and others, then its description was repeated in [Surah Yunus, Hud, Yusuf, and Ar-Ra'd] that it is wise, precise, detailed, and clear. And that it is the fixed truth that the towering mountains may vanish, yet it remains steadfast and nothing of it falters. No meaning of its meanings is shaken. He mentioned it at the beginning of [this] surah, negating the indefinite article of glorification, saying: 'A Book' meaning it is great in degrees of greatness. Your minds cannot bear the news of it without this description. And the reasoning for its description as 'clear' indicates that it is Arabic, with the implication: 'We have sent it down' meaning with what we possess of greatness 'to you' in the language of your people to clarify for them.
And when the definition of the attributes that necessitate success mentioned at the beginning of the Surah, which is supported by every illuminating proof and clear authority, was gathered, it became such that no one who understands the realities of those attributes would stop reaping its fruits. He encouraged towards that fruit after detailing what is in the beginning of Al-Baqarah in the one before it, as has been mentioned, with what urges and draws the heart of every rational person towards it. He said: ﴿To bring forth the people﴾, meaning your entire people and others by your calling them with it, even if they are of those who are confused, ﴿from darkness﴾, which are many types of misguidance that ignorance has led to, ﴿to the light﴾, which is one, and it is the path of Allah that is called guidance to it in Al-Fatiha, or ﴿to clarify for the Arabs, your people, because it is in their language a clear statement﴾, so that you make them - by what you establish upon them of the shining arguments, and clarify for them of the decisive proofs, and set for them of the evident signs, and rule for them of the brilliant evidences - in the like of the light of day by what has opened from the locks of their eyes, and uncovered from the coverings of their hearts, so that they may be able to emerge from the darkness of disbelief, which are the paths of Satan, to the light of faith, which is his path. ﴿And do not follow the paths, lest they separate you from His path﴾ [Al-An'am: 153]. He compared faith and what he guided to it with light, because it is a protection for the mind from error on the path to Allah, just as light is a protection for the sight from straying from the physical path. And when they emerge into the light, they are deserving of bringing forth all people ﴿by the permission of their Lord﴾, meaning the One who is gracious to them; and permission is the allowance in action by a word that is heard by the ear, this is its origin - as said by Al-Rumani.
And when the light was summarized, he clarified it in the manner of resumption or substitution by repeating the agent, and he said: ﴿to the path of the Almighty﴾, who is exalted above the attributes of deficiency. (p-372) So He is exalted [above] anyone entering His path, which is His Lord, or anyone approaching its traveler without His permission. ﴿The Praiseworthy﴾, encompassing all perfection, He is deserving of all praises for His essence and for what He bestows upon His servants of the blessings that He nurtures them with and for which they praise Him in every situation. So how would it be if they walked His clear, wide, and easy path!
