Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified that they covered the verses of their Lord, the Most Generous to them, with those verses and others, He was astonished by them with another astonishment in their request for the descent of the verses, despite their being equal in their indication of the Creator and what He has of the attributes of perfection. So when they disbelieved in what was brought to them, they were deserving of disbelief in what comes to them. And He said: ﴿And they say﴾ meaning as a continuation ﴿those who disbelieved﴾ mocking the power ﴿Why﴾ meaning why not ﴿has a sign been sent down upon him﴾ (p-286) denying stubbornly what was brought to him of the verses ﴿from his Lord﴾ meaning the Benefactor to him, confirming him.
And when the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, was eager to respond to their suggestions due to his intense attention to their oaths, it was as if he asked for that so that they might attain salvation. He was answered by His saying - presenting what the context is more appropriate for, as it is to clarify that most do not believe -: ﴿Indeed, you are only a warner﴾ meaning a Prophet who warns them, guiding them by clarifying what has been revealed to you of that which leads to destruction or brings them to salvation, proceeding among them according to what has been determined for you. The essence of warning is informing about the place of fear [to be avoided], not that you establish faith in the hearts. ﴿And for every nation﴾ of those to whom We sent a Prophet ﴿a guide﴾ meaning a caller who guides them to their good and a warner who warns them from their evils, meaning clarifying to them what We sent with it of warning and glad tidings. And He gave every warner and guide signs that are suitable for him and his people, upon which humanity believes. So Allah guides whom He knows in him the receptiveness to guidance by what He has established of the observable signs. Thus, he does not need anything from the suggestions, and he misleads whom He knows [in him] the causes of misguidance, even if every sign were to come to him, for he is the one who has created them upon the natures of good and evil (p-287) ﴿Does he not know who created, and He is the Subtle, the All-Aware﴾ [Al-Mulk: 14]. So it is like His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And there is no nation but that there has passed within it a warner﴾ [Fatir: 24]. And like His saying in this surah: ﴿And those who disbelieved say, 'Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Lord?' Say, 'Indeed, Allah misguides whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back'﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 27]. And the sign of the interlocking is that mentioning the warner first indicates the omission of him second, and mentioning the guide second indicates the omission of a similar one first.
