And when it was established with clear evidence of His immense power by what He has placed of wonders in His dominion, which none can accomplish except Him, that this is indeed one overpowering, chosen act that brings the nonexistent into existence and causes a difference between what the natures require to be unified, the denial of anything from His power is astonishing. So He said, in addition to His saying: "But most of the people do not believe" [Ar-Ra'd: 1], indicating that they say: The promise of resurrection is magic, there is no truth to it. "And if you are astonished," meaning on a day or an hour of time, be astonished at their denial of resurrection. "So it is a great astonishment, whose degrees of greatness are endless." Their saying, after they saw the manifest signs and the clear indications of immense power over everything, while denying: "Are we indeed to be turned to dust?" And the dust that you will be turned into has mixed with the original dust, so it has become indistinguishable. Then they repeated the astonishment and denial with a second question, saying: "Are we indeed in a new creation?" This is their saying after we have detailed from the signs what necessitates that they are certain of meeting their Lord. And this second question explains what the first was set up for, with its meaning of "to be resurrected." And astonishment is the change of the soul due to what the cause of it is hidden from the norm. And the new is that which is prepared for the creation before the arrangement in actions. And the essence of the attribute is the cutting off. Al-Rummani said: It has been said: There is no good in one who does not marvel at astonishment, and worse than him is one who marvels at something that is not astonishing. This means: The disbelievers were astonished without any reason for astonishment, and whoever was astonished by them has indeed marveled at astonishment.
And when this is a denial of the tangible from the ability, they deserve what is deserved by one who attacks the King of Kings. So He said: ﴿Those﴾ meaning those who have gathered types of distance along with every good ﴿Those who disbelieved in their Lord﴾ meaning they have covered all that must be made apparent due to their disdain for the One who began their creation and then nurtured them with various kindnesses. So if they deny their return, they have indeed denied their origin. ﴿And those﴾ [meaning] the distant, the detestable ﴿The shackles﴾ meaning the chains that bind the hands of the captives to their necks, and it is said to be: the gatherers. Sometimes it is only around the necks that people are punished with it; and when the ends of the neck are thick, the encompassing of the gatherer from it, if it is narrow, can only be from the middle. He made the necks as circumstances considering that they are upon some of it, and that is a metaphor for its narrowness. So He said: ﴿Around their necks﴾ meaning by their disbelief, and even if the shackles are not currently visible, they are for the ability of the one threatened by them to act as if they are present. And they are led to what has been decreed upon them by its causes just as the shackled one is led by it to what his leader wants. And the shackle: is a collar by which the hand is bound to the neck, and its origin is: it has entangled in something - if it has become entangled in it, and the wealth has been betrayed - if it has become entangled in the forbidden wealth. ﴿And those﴾ meaning those for whom there is no greater loss than their loss ﴿The companions of the Fire﴾ And when companionship necessitates proximity, He specified it by saying: 'They are' meaning specifically ﴿In it﴾ meaning purely without being mixed with any pleasure ﴿Abiding forever﴾ meaning their permanence is always established.
