Commentary

So it is as if it were said: What do they have for what they have done of that? It was said: (p-353) ﴿For them﴾ meaning those who disbelieved ﴿is a punishment﴾ and it is the continuous pain, and among it is the torment because it continues in the throat ﴿in this worldly life﴾ difficult, due to the resistance of the party of Allah against them in preventing them from the path to what is connected with that of killing and captivity. And for them in the Hereafter, if they die upon that, is a punishment ﴿and the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe﴾ meaning it is harsher in difficulty, and it is the severity of the matter upon the soul to the extent that the heart nearly bursts. ﴿And they have no protector from Allah﴾ meaning the Greatest King ﴿from any protector﴾ meaning a barrier that prevents them if He intends for them harm in this world or in the Hereafter, and the protector is the doer of protection, which is the stone that repels harm.
