Commentary
And when reason is the greatest of proofs, and it has been established that it is limited to those who reflect, indicating that those other than them are like wandering cattle, it is known that what the Shari'ah calls to is righteousness, and its opposite is corruption. Reason is indeed for knowing righteousness so that it is followed, and corruption so that it is avoided. The one seeking to bring down a verse other than that, especially after many verses and clear indications, is in a position to be astonished by it. He said, in a manner of astonishment, in addition to his saying ﴿And they rejoice﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 26], revealing what is implied, drawing attention to the description that necessitated their obstinacy: ﴿And those who disbelieve say﴾ meaning they have concealed what their minds called them to of good and what is for Allah from the signs in obstinacy ﴿Why﴾ meaning why not and why not.
And when it has been established that what is realized is from the King, there is no need to ask about the one who brings it. His saying: ﴿It has been revealed to him﴾ means this Messenger ﷺ ﴿a sign﴾ meaning a clear indication ﴿from his Lord﴾ meaning the One who does good to him by responding to what he asks so that we may be guided by it and believe in it. And He commanded him to respond to that by saying: ﴿Say﴾ meaning to these obstinate ones: how severe is your obstinacy when you said this saying which contains your denial that a verse has been sent down to me, while no one has been given signs like what I have been given. He certainly knew that the sending down of verses is not a cause for faith, but the matter is with Allah ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾ meaning the One who has no command with anyone with Him ﴿misguides whom He wills﴾ His misguidance is for those who have not repented, but rather turned away from the evidence of reason and negated what it has firmly established from the covenant of the premises that produce certainty in the truth of what the messengers called to, due to what his heart has been created with of hardness. Thus, he became in a position where he does not believe even if all signs were sent down to him, because they are all equal in their call to what reason has called to for those who have reason. And indeed, before this, many verses with greater indications have been revealed regarding the intended meaning ﴿And He guides﴾ when the callers call to Him ﴾to His obedience﴾. By mere evidence of reason without seeking a sign ﴿Whoever turns﴾ meaning whoever's heart is inclined towards the proofs, returning to them because he willed his turning, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and others from among the ten who were given glad tidings of Paradise and others.
