So when he saw that the matter had reached its limit and there was nothing left for him to fear, he introduced them to himself. Then Allah, the Most High, began to inform them about that by saying: ﴿He said, 'Did you know?'﴾ confirming to them after they had dared to approach him and felt at ease with him. The apparent meaning is that this was without a translator, 'What a disgrace is that which ﴿you did to Yusuf﴾, that is, your brother whom you separated from his father ﴿and your brother﴾ by making him alone and humiliated among you. Then [in] your saying to him when they found the cup in his bag: 'The calamity continues to come to us from you, O sons of Raheel!' And he informed them that his opinion of them now was good, to calm them. So he said: ﴿When﴾, that is, at the time ﴿you were ignorant﴾, that is, when you committed their act - hinting [to them] of his knowledge and reminding them of the sin so that they might repent. [And] being gentle with them in that situation where the distressed breathes, and the aggrieved exhales, and the enraged finds relief, and the wronged seeks his revenge, by specifying their ignorance - according to the implication of 'when' - at that time, to make it clear to them that they are now contrary to that.
