And when that was completed, it was as if it was said: Indeed, the removal of their brother from them - after those covenants which they confirmed to their father - is for a calamity that would bewilder the minds. So what was their action at that time? It was said: "They said" as a consolation for themselves and to push away the shame from their own. "If he steals" they did not assert his stealing, due to their knowledge of his trustworthiness, and their assumption that this cup was hidden in his pack while he was unaware, just as their goods were hidden in his packs. And what weakened their assumption was the silence of their brother about apologizing for it, although it has been reported that they reproached him, and he said to them: "He placed it in the pack of the one who placed the goods in their packs." "Indeed, a brother has stolen" meaning a full brother. And when what they thought was thus in a short time, they included the neighbor and said: "Before" meaning Joseph, blessings and peace be upon him. This is because it was said: His aunt could not be patient without him, and his father would not allow him to stay with her, for he could not be patient without him. So she tightened him from under her clothes with the belt of her father Isaac, blessings be upon him, while she was with her. Then she said: "I have lost my father's belt, so uncover the people of the house." They found it with Joseph, blessings and peace be upon him. Then Jacob, blessings and peace be upon him, allowed him to remain with her at that time. "So he kept it secret" meaning their response to this ugly saying. "Joseph in himself" regarding his ability to do what he intends against them in terms of revenge.

And when perhaps someone might think that he wept over them after that, this assumption is negated by His saying, the Exalted: "And he did not disclose it to them" meaning originally. "What was his saying that he kept secret in himself?" It was said: "He said: You are worse in position" meaning than Joseph and his brother. For what was attributed to them of evil is only apparent for a matter of good that it necessitated. As for you, your action against Joseph is an evil intention from you, both outwardly and inwardly. And the attribution of evil to their place is greater than its attribution to them. And he preceded the news of the secret with its conjunction to the implicit before the mention, so that it would not be assumed at first that they heard what he described them with of evil. "And Allah" meaning the One who has complete knowledge. "Knows best what you describe" from you, and that it is not as you said; and the description is a word derived from the root of [from] the roots to differentiate between it and others by way of contradiction, like the difference between the knowledgeable and the ignorant and similar.
