They said, trusting in their innocence and informing about the ruling among them, "His recompense is from the cup." And since the lesson is in the very experience, they based their statement on the effect: "It was found in his luggage." And to confirm their innocence, they attached the ruling to mere finding, not to theft. Then they emphasized that with their words: "So it is his recompense," meaning there is nothing else. It is as if it was said: [Is] this a matter you have just created now or is it prescribed for you? They said: "So it is," meaning [rather] it is a tradition for us, like that severe recompense, "We recompense the wrongdoers," meaning with wrongdoing always, we will lessen it in his theft.
