And it is as if in the first instance also, in preparing them to learn of their news over a long period of time without their awareness. Therefore, he did not use the conjunction 'fa' (and), and he hastened in preparing them this time, intending to isolate himself with his brother without any observer through the scheme he devised. For this reason, the 'fa' came in his saying: "So when he prepared them" meaning the quickest and best preparation "with their provisions." This is supported by "Then came Our command" in the stories of Salih and Lut, blessings and peace be upon them, as mentioned in Surah Hud, blessings and peace be upon him. "He made" meaning by himself or by whom he commanded, "the drinking cup" that belonged to him. It is a vessel he uses to give drink "in the baggage of his brother," his full brother, to devise a means to keep him with him, knowing that the seer would not rule on his theft by that, with the possibility that the cup was placed in his baggage without his knowledge, as he did with their goods in the first instance. As for the non-seer, the harm of establishing that in his mind is dependent on the fact that it is trivial compared to what results from the benefit of those who are familiar with his brothers by Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, and the removal of their fear of him by his staying with him, as will come with further clarification. This is with the realization of innocence from proximity, so it is from the category of committing the lesser of two harms. Then he delayed them until they departed, then he sent to them and they were detained. "Then" meaning after their departure and their persistence in traveling, "he called out" meaning he informed them with the call. "A caller" saying with a loud voice, even though they were in utmost proximity to him - as indicated by the omission of the tool: "O caravan," meaning its people. He confirmed what they had of denial, "Indeed, you are thieves," meaning it is established for you without a doubt as a reality due to what you did regarding Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, or metaphorically that you are acting like thieves - as will be clarified shortly. Although this call is not from the words of Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, it is possible that it was not by his command until it needed to be corrected, but rather the one who said it understood that from his saying, peace be upon him: "The cup is with the caravan," or as if they took the cup, so go and bring it to me or them - and similar to that which is true in itself. The caravan is the group that carries loads, and the original meaning is in donkeys, then it became common to refer to every caravan by analogy to it. And the verse contains the indication of what necessitates gentleness in reaching the desired goal through the establishment of the means that lead to it and invoke it with an outward beauty and an inner truth that is hidden from many people, its location, and its aspect is unclear to him, because it is more effective for him and more successful for what is required of him.
