And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed us that He encouraged them regarding their brother, and frightened them with the words, He informed us that He encouraged them regarding him with action. So he said, adding to his previous words to them: 'And he said,' meaning Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, out of compassion for his brothers and a desire to advise them in what he asked them about: ﴿To his young men﴾ meaning his youths. The root of the word youth is the strong young man, and its explanation will come when He, exalted is He, says: ﴿You will continue to remember Yusuf﴾ [Yusuf: 85]. ﴿Put their merchandise﴾ meaning what they traded, that is, what they cut from their wealth for trade, and we took it from them as payment for the food we provided for them ﴿in their saddlebags﴾ meaning their packs; and a saddlebag is what is prepared for travel, whether it be a container or a mount. ﴿So that they may recognize it﴾ meaning their merchandise; and he expressed it with a tool of certainty, hoping for them safety, or out of assumption, or knowledge by revelation. So he said: ﴿When they return﴾ to their families, meaning they recognize that it is indeed the same, I returned it to them as a kindness [to them], and they will affirm that, and they do not think that Allah has failed them in something like it, considering their condition and honoring their father.
