Commentary

And when the meaning was strong enough to say: So they requested from him provisions, and he sold them after he inquired about their affair. He said to them: Perhaps you are spies? He asked them about all of their conditions. They informed him about their father and their brother from him, so that he would know their righteousness and not think that they are spies. He then turned to his saying: ﴿And when he had equipped them﴾, meaning Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿with their supplies﴾ which they came to him for, and he had done good to them; and the supplies are the finest goods that are carried from one country to another. He said to them: ﴿Bring me﴾ O group, ﴿a brother of yours﴾ who is ﴿from your father﴾, so that he comes with a message from your righteous father, until I may believe you, or that they requested from him a burden for their brother. He showed that he did not believe them and requested to bring him so that he may give it to him, for he was distributing food according to the measure of sufficiency. Then he encouraged them by enticing them with something similar to what he had done for them in kindness. He had indeed treated them well in their lodging, so he said, affirming to them [by what they saw from him]: (p-147) ﴿Do you not see﴾, meaning you know a knowledge that is like sight, ﴿that I fulfill the measure﴾, meaning I always complete it according to what the truth requires, ﴿and I am the best of hosts﴾, I place the thing in its rightful place.
