Commentary
So it is as if it was said: What did the truthful one say? It was said: He said what is required of him in striving for the reform of religion and this world, 'Appoint me as a guardian over the treasures of the earth.' This means the land of Egypt, which, due to its abundance of goodness, is as if it is the earth. Then he explained it with what is the aim of kings, which they hardly ever attain, saying: 'Indeed, I am a guardian.' This means capable of controlling what is entrusted to me and being trustworthy in it. 'Knowledgeable' means having profound knowledge of the ways of its reform and its improvement. So he informed about what Allah has gathered for him of the tools of preservation and understanding, along with what is necessary for preservation from strength and trustworthiness, for the salvation of the servants from what may come upon them of evil. This would be a reason for their turning away from false religion to the true religion.
