Commentary
And when that was, perhaps it led to admiration, he said: ﴿And I do not absolve﴾ meaning a great absolution ﴿myself﴾ from absolute error, even if success and protection prevail over it. That is, I did not intend by the absolution from what has preceded merely the commendation of the self. He explained the lack of absolution by saying - confirming what most people deny, or that their following their desires is the act of one who denies the act of commanding -: ﴿Indeed, the soul﴾ meaning this type ﴿is certainly commanding﴾ meaning strongly commanding ﴿to evil﴾ meaning this kind is always inclined to that due to its nature at all times ﴿except what﴾ meaning at the time that ﴿my Lord has mercy﴾ by restraining it from commanding it or by concealing it by restraining it from acting upon it after unleashing it to command it, or except what my Lord has mercy upon of the souls so it does not command evil; then he explained that by saying, confirming to dispel the thought of one who thinks that there is no repentance for him: ﴿Indeed, my Lord﴾ meaning the one who is good to me ﴿is Forgiving﴾ meaning He is one who covers sins profoundly ﴿and Merciful﴾ meaning He is one who honors greatly those who wish.
