Commentary
So it is as if it were said: What did his father say to him? It was said: He said, knowing that his brothers would envy him for what this vision indicates if they heard it, 'O my son.' He expressed his concern for him and emphasized the prohibition by showing the emphasis, saying: 'Do not relate your vision.' That is, this 'to your brothers.' Then he explained the reason for the prohibition by his saying: 'They will plot against you.' That is, they will cause you harm, the 'lam' indicates specificity. And in this verse is evidence that there is no prohibition against backbiting for the purpose of advice; rather, it is something that is recommended. Al-Rummani said: The vision is the perception of meaning in sleep as if one were imagining seeing it. This is because the intellect is veiled by sleep. When a person perceives the meaning, he imagines that he sees it. Imam al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: It is the stillness of the external senses from perception and feeling, and the movement of the internal feelings towards the faculties. For the human soul has external senses and internal feelings. When the external senses are still, the internal senses are employed in perceiving absent matters. Sometimes they may perceive them in the form they are in, so there is no need for interpretation. Sometimes they may see them in a form that is similar and appropriate to them, so they require interpretation. An example of the former is the vision of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that he entered the Sacred Mosque, and the latter is like the vision of Yusuf, peace be upon him. Al-Rummani said: The true vision has an interpretation, and the false vision has no interpretation - this is for those whose hearts are asleep and they are not among the prophets, peace be upon them. And since it is customary that the concern of brothers prevents such a thing, he explained it for him by saying: 'Indeed, Satan,' that is, the burning and distant one, 'is an open enemy to man,' meaning to all, especially the elders among them, 'an evident enemy,' that is, clear in enmity and clarifying it to every aware person, causing enmity by what he imagines of missing out on opportunities by abandoning them. And in this verse is evidence that the matter of visions is complex, so it is not appropriate to relate them except to a compassionate advisor.
