And when these matters necessitated his elevation, he was then the farthest thing from prison if the people were capable of managing their affairs according to the soundness of their minds. Allah, the Most High, informed that they opposed the call to righteousness and exchanged misguidance for guidance. This is due to His decree that imprisonment is a great cause for diverting their plots away from him and establishing honor and power for him. They acted - while knowing that this was oppression and folly - in response to the overwhelming command of Allah and in manifestation of his high status by repeatedly opposing the norms, demolishing the soundness of the causes one after another. So He said: "Then" for this meaning, which is that they should have been [from -] his imprisonment at the utmost distance. "Bada" means it appeared after being hidden, as is their custom. The appearance in opinion is the change in it due to the emergence of what had not been apparent from it.
