And when their matter was completed and they grew up under their father [peace be upon him], the fire of sorrow turned the soul's attention to the news about Yusuf [peace be upon him], as indicated by His saying: "Surely, you will inform them" [Yusuf: 15]. So Allah, the Most High, informed about that in its causes: "And a caravan came"; meaning a group that is proficient in traveling to the land where they threw Yusuf [peace be upon him] in its well. "And they sent their water-drawer"; meaning their messenger whom they send to oversee the water to the well to draw for them. "And he lowered his bucket"; meaning he sent it into the well to fill it. As for "dalla"; it means he pulled it out full. So Yusuf [peace be upon him] held onto it and brought him out. It was as if it was said: What did he say when he lowered to the water and Yusuf clung to the rope and he brought him up? And he saw a person who was the most handsome of all. It was said: "He said"; meaning the water-drawer informed his companions of the good news: "O good news"; meaning this is your time, so come. It was as if it was said: Why do you call for good news? He said: "This is a boy"; so he brought him to his companions and they rejoiced in him as the saying goes: "And they kept it secret"; meaning the water-drawer and his companions, "as a merchandise"; meaning in the state of him being a possession, according to their claim, they would trade in him. "And Allah"; meaning the All-Encompassing in knowledge and power, "is All-Knowing"; meaning of profound knowledge, "of what they do"; even if they kept it secret. Abu Hayyan said, and how good is what he said: His clinging to the rope indicates his smallness, for if he were the son of eighteen or seventeen, the rope would not generally carry him. And the term "boy" returns to that, as it is applied to one between infancy and adulthood in reality, and it may also be applied to a complete man.
