Commentary

And when it was known that there is nothing after this action except for an apology, he added to the implied response his saying: ﴿And they came to their father﴾ without mentioning Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿at night﴾ in the darkness of the night so that their father would not discern their faces if he saw them in the light of day, contrary to what they had brought with them of an apology. It has been said: Do not seek a need at night, for shyness is in the eyes, and do not apologize during the day for a sin, lest you stammer in your apology. And the verse indicates that crying does not indicate truthfulness due to the possibility of pretense. ﴿They are crying﴾ and crying is the flow of tears in the eyes at the time of sorrow.
