So it is as if it was said: This plot is great and the matter is serious. What did their father do? It was said: He responded to their request and sent him with them. When they went, they were determined in their going, all of them. Each one of them was united in a sincere intention; and consensus on an action means the determination to do it with all the motives combined. They intended to make him, and making means creating something by which a thing becomes contrary to what it was. Its counterpart is transformation and action. They did this without any hindrance. However, since this response was very clear due to the indication of the situation, it was left out because when they all agreed on it, he knew that there was no hindrance for them from it. Then he added to this omitted response, due to its strength, his saying: And We revealed to him, meaning with what We have of greatness, to Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him.

And when he was in a state of great distance from salvation, his saying was confirmed: 'Surely, you will inform them,' meaning you will inform them with a great informing in a manner that is rare in its magnificence about this matter they have done to you, while they do not perceive it. This is due to your high status, the greatness of your authority, and the distance of your condition from their imaginations, and due to the long time that changes the states and alters the forms and shapes. That you are Yusuf. This was said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and Al-Hasan and Ibn Jurayj as narrated by Al-Rumani. The perception is the understanding of a thing, similar to a hair in its fineness, and from it are the senses in the body. Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him, was when they threw him into the well, twelve years old, as Al-Hasan said. They said: And the confirmation of this is that when they entered upon him, begging, he called for the cup and placed it in his hands, then he realized and said: This cup surely informs me that you had a brother from your father named Yusuf, and your father used to bring him close to you, and that you went away with him and threw him into the well and said to your father: A wolf ate him.
