111Surely, in the narratives of these, there is a lesson for the people of understanding. It is not an invented story, rather, a confirmation of what has been before it, and an elaboration of everything, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned these stories as they were, and urged reflection upon them by His saying: "Do they not travel?" [Yusuf: 109] He indicated that by this He has established His tradition, even if the duration is long. He followed it with the certainty that in their narratives there is the greatest lesson. He said, urging contemplation and insight: "Indeed, there was" [meaning] a state that is of the utmost possibility "in their stories," meaning the great news that has been recited to you, following the accounts of the messengers who faced great trials until they despaired, from Nuh to Yusuf and those after them - upon all of them be the best prayers, peace, greetings, and honor. "A lesson" means a great admonition and a noble reminder "for people of understanding," meaning for those who possess pure intellect free from the impurities of confusion. They express through it what brings them happiness, knowing that He who was able to narrate the story of Yusuf, peace be upon him, and others is capable of honoring Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, and elevating his word and supporting him against whoever opposes him, no matter who they are, just as He did with Yusuf and others - in addition to other matters to which their stories guide regarding wisdom and return to them from the precious lessons; and the stories: the news of what some recount about others, from narrating the effect, and the understanding: the intellect, because the intellect is the most precious thing in a person and the most noble.

And when it was for the sake of the lesson in that cutting off regarding the truthfulness of the Qur'an, for what it clarified of the truths of their conditions, the hidden matters of them, and the subtle details of their news, by these brilliant styles, the evident details, and the miraculous, overpowering methods, He alerted to that by the estimation of a question and said: ﴿What was﴾ meaning this Qur'an, the Arabic one, which includes their stories and others ﴿a saying that is fabricated﴾ as the adversaries said - as indicated by His saying: "Or do they say, 'He has fabricated it'?" And fabrication is the cutting off in meaning contrary to what it is in the reporting about it, as in: I have cut the leather. ﴿But﴾ it was ﴿a confirmation of that which﴾ was from the books and others ﴿before it﴾ meaning before it, which is sufficient in the testimony of its truthfulness and authenticity in itself. "And" He added to that by being "a detailed account of everything" meaning what is needed from the matters of religion, this world, and the Hereafter; and the detailing is the division of the whole by giving each part its due. ﴿And guidance and mercy﴾ and clarification and honor. And when the one who does not benefit from something does not relate to anything of it, He said: ﴿For a people who believe﴾ meaning faith occurs from them, even if it means: their faith is possible, so it is general. And what gathered these attributes is the clearest of statements. This has applied to the beginning of the surah in that it is the clear Book, and what followed these stories has applied - from the testimony of the truthfulness of the Qur'an, and that the messengers are not angels [nor are there angels with them] for the testimony appearing to the people, and that they did not ask for a reward for delivering - due to what followed these stories, which is guaranteed by His saying, the Exalted: ﴿So perhaps you will leave out some of what is revealed to you﴾ [Hud: 12] - the verse from their saying: ﴿Why has a treasure not been sent down to him or an angel not come with him?﴾ [Hud: 12] and their saying: [Indeed, he] has fabricated it, in the arrangement of that, along with embracing this other one to the first that follows it. So glorified is He who revealed it, miraculous and brilliant, and adjudicating with the truth that remains apparent, and how could it not be when He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise - and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows best.
