Commentary
And when the Great Qur'an is the greatest of the signs by what it informs about the past news and the coming events as they are, containing judgments and rulings, in styles of eloquence that cannot be matched, and other things that cannot be counted by a system, as indicated at the beginning of the surah, it may be said that this may only be known by those firmly rooted in divine knowledge. It is also indicated that He, glorified and exalted is He, has other signs that do not require more than intellect for their clarity, which cannot be encompassed by enumeration. Yet, despite that, they did not benefit from it. So He said: "And how many a sign" meaning a great and significant sign indicating His oneness "in the heavens" meaning like the two lights and other celestial bodies and clouds and other than that "and the earth" from mountains and trees and animals and other things that cannot be counted - as will be detailed in [Surah Ar-Ra'd] explicitly. "They pass by it" witnessing it with their senses, apparent and not hidden. "And they are, from it" meaning specifically not from their pleasures and desires with it "turning away" meaning from its indication of happiness from the oneness and what follows it.
