Commentary
And when He, the Exalted, mentioned what they are upon of disbelief, He mentioned what is astonishing about it and said: "And what" meaning they are upon that while the cause of their belief is present. That is because you - along with calling them to the straight path and bringing to them the clearest evidence - do not ask them for it, meaning this Book that We have revealed to you. And He emphasized the negation by saying: "for a reward" so that your asking would be a reason for them to accuse you or say: 'If only a treasure had been sent down to him so that he could be independent of our questioning.'
And when He negated their asking for a reward, He negated from this mention every worldly purpose by saying: "It is nothing but a reminder" meaning a reminder and honor "for the worlds." Al-Rummani said: And the reminder is the presence of the meaning to the self, and the world is a group of many animals that are capable of knowing, because it has taken from knowledge. And it has the meaning of multitude, and it may be said: the world of the heavens and what it contains in the way of being subordinate to the animal that we benefit from, and it is made for its sake.
