Commentary
And when the Quraysh and the Jews asked the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, about the story of Yusuf, may peace and blessings be upon him, as Abu Hayyan reported from Ibn al-Anbari, this explanation was revealed, clarifying this comprehensive statement. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, hoped that this would be a reason for their Islam, but they opposed his hope. Allah consoled him with His saying: "And what" means We reveal to you in this manner that necessitates their belief, while the fact is that "most of the people" means all of them, despite what they have of confusion. "And if you were eager" means for their belief "with believers" means with sincere ones in their faith, describing Allah with what befits Him, free from any shortcomings. So do not think that they will believe due to the revelation of what they propose of signs, or due to abandoning what angers them from the warning. And many - al-Rummani said: the additional number beyond the amount of others, and the most is the additional oath beyond the other oath from the total, and its opposite is the least; and the people are the collective of humanity, and it is from 'nasa' which means to move right and left from oneself, not by pulling another.
