Commentary
So it is as if it was said: This is one of the most astonishing matters regarding the relatives, let alone the brothers. So what did they say upon hearing it? It was said: "He said." And since the context indicates that the entire matter is for Allah, He saves whom He wills by what He wills. The intention is not to clarify who was the one through whom the salvation occurred. So he said ambiguously, indicating that it is necessary to speak words of advice from any speaker, and that a person should not belittle himself in giving advice in any circumstance: "A speaker." Then he specified it somewhat by saying: "Among them," meaning: the brothers of Yusuf, blessings and peace be upon him. "Do not kill Yusuf," neither by your hands nor by throwing him into the dangers, for killing is one of the greatest sins after associating partners with Allah. And it seems that there was not in their direction any other well but one, so he recognized it and said: "And throw him." And it seems that it contained water and a place where one could settle in it, and there is no water in it. So he intended by his saying: "In the depths of the well," meaning: its depth that is hidden from the eyes, for that is sufficient for the intended purpose. And if you do so, "some travelers will pick him up," a plural of traveler, which means one who is excessive in traveling. This is "if you are" and there is no doubt "acting" on what you intended by hiding him from his father so that his face may be clear for you. And the well is the pit that has not been covered, for he cut off its soil until the water reached. And according to Abu Amr: This was before they became prophets.
