Commentary
In its neck, meaning its throat, and the best of what is in it is a rope, like that of woodcutters, specifying its matter and belittling its state. From [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: masad], meaning palm fiber or the fiber of the poor, or from something that has been twisted and its twisting has been perfected, from their saying: a man of bad character, meaning one who is twisted. And the end of it returns to the beginning, for whoever has a wife depicted in the form of a woodcutter, with a bundle of firewood hanging on her back, her rope in her neck is in the utmost state of insignificance, degradation, meanness, and loss. The essence of this surah is that Abu Lahab severed his ties of kinship and strayed from the right path, and he exerted himself after his misguidance in misleading others. And the injustice to the advisor who is compassionate towards him, who did not spare any effort in advising him, as you see that he did not spare any effort in harming him, and he relied on his wealth and earnings, so he perished and caused his wife to perish with him and those of his children who followed him. Among the greatest objectives of Surah An-Nisa, which corresponds to it in refuting the excerpt at the beginning, is the connection, closeness, and kindness, especially to those of kinship, and justice in all sayings and actions. Thus, it was the explanation of the state of the advisor who does not speak from desire, and the state of the misguided who only speaks from desire. His saying, exalted is He: 'Allah intends to make clear to you and to guide you to the ways of those before you.' And its conclusion is a reference to warning against a state like his, as if it were said: Allah makes clear to you not to go astray, so be like Abu Lahab in destruction, and he will enter the fire, as has been made clear to you. So be cautious of everything that resembles his state, even if it appears to you otherwise, for I know better than you - and Allah is All-Knowing of everything. And praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
