Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed of the occurrence of this greatest torment upon him, and there is no punishment that can compare to the punishment of the Hereafter, He clarified it by His saying: ﴿He will enter﴾ meaning, surely, by a promise that there is no breaking of it ﴿a Fire﴾ meaning, it will be thrust into it, and it will bend towards him and surround him.

And when the intended purpose was the severity of his punishment with the utmost heat, as it burned the hearts of the righteous, and the Fire may be a spark then extinguish from near, He said: ﴿of blazing flame﴾ meaning, it does not settle nor cease ever, because that is the indication of the companionship expressed by "of". This is after his death, and there is no decisive evidence in the surah that he does not believe, for it is permissible that the one who is punished is in sin. So there is no evidence in it for the one who says: that it contains the obligation of what he knows to be impossible, for he would have been obligated to believe, and he knows (p-339) that it is a ruling that he does not believe. And indeed, Allah has confirmed this news with his death as a disbeliever in the second year of the Hijrah after the Battle of Badr, which is the fifteenth of Prophethood. However, what he knew necessitated his disbelief only by his dying as a disbeliever, not by anything in this surah or otherwise. And it is strange that the words related to him in this surah are fifteen words, indicating the year of his death after he witnessed his destruction in the Battle of Badr and others with his own eyes. So if we add to it the four words of the Basmala, it equals the year six of the Hijrah, which is the year of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the year of the significant victory in which his destruction [and loss] was realized by everyone who has faith in the unseen and repels doubt. So if you add to it the two prominent pronouns that are closer to the conventional words than the hidden ones, it equals the year eight of the Hijrah, which was the year of the true victory, so it was confirmed among all of Quraysh what was revealed in this surah. So if you add to it the three hidden pronouns, it equals the year eleven, noting that if you start with the hidden pronouns, the correspondence is also achieved, as it corresponds to the year nine, which is the year of the delegations in which people entered into the religion in groups, and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, led the pilgrimage that year. And it was proclaimed (p-340) in the season of pilgrimage about the declaration of immunity, that no polytheist should perform pilgrimage after that year. So the disappointment of Abu Lahab was realized among all who attended the season, especially those who knew of his following the Prophet ﷺ and his denying him from both Muslims and others. So if we add to that the two prominent pronouns, it equals the year eleven, the first years of the caliphate of al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, in which the entire Arabian Peninsula was opened after the devil played with many of its people.

So they returned after Allah had killed from them those who knew that he was created for Hell. At that time, what was for Abu Lahab of destruction and the fire that is blazing was confirmed among all the Arabs by their general belief in the eleventh year of the Hijrah, after the passage of twenty-three years from the Prophethood. The matter was established then, and it was known that the religion had firmly taken root and its pillars were established. And that which protected him during the life of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, continued to protect him after him, and He, glorified and exalted is He, is alive and does not die, and is capable of anything. The number of words in the Surah is twenty-three, which corresponds to the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the year ten. For it is the twenty-third year from the time of the mission, and in it the religion was completed and the verse of Al-Ma'idah was revealed. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was informed that the devil had given up hope of being worshipped in the land of the Arabs. Thus, all people realized, especially those who attended the season, the destruction of Abu Lahab, who used to circulate in those scenes behind the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, denying him and harming him. Indeed, in that is a lesson.
