Commentary

And when he expressed the meaning by coming, he expressed the visible by the sight and said: ﴿And you saw﴾ meaning with your own eyes ﴿the people﴾ meaning the Arabs who were insignificant among all nations. They became, through you, the people - as indicated by the لام of perfection. And the rest of the people of the earth became their followers, and in relation to them, subjects, while they were ﴿entering﴾ gradually, their entry continuously ﴿into the religion of Allah﴾ meaning the legislation of the One whose word has always been the highest in the state of the creation's refusal - by His overpowering them over the disbelief that no sane person would accept for himself - abandoning desires. And in the state of their obedience, by His compelling them to obedience, he expressed it by the religion, which means the recompense because the Arabs did not believe in the resurrection, which the appearance of the recompense cannot occur except by it. ﴿In groups﴾ meaning tribes of tribes and clusters of clusters and large gatherings like a tribe with all its members, one nation after another, like the people of Mecca, Ta'if, Hawazin, Hamdan, and the other tribes without fighting, in lightness, speed, and surprise, and gently after their entry one by one and so on because they said: As for when he prevails over the people of the sanctuary, and Allah had protected them from the companions of the elephant, whom no one could repel, then we have no standing against them. So it became clear that this analogy, which produced this obvious result from the story of the companions of the elephant, was arranged by Allah only as a precursor to his prophethood and a foundation for his call. They cast their hands, and they submitted their leadership, both their present and their past.
