Commentary
And when the outcome was what they called them to, which was to abandon what their forefathers had upon them of foolishness regarding the Creator by associating partners with Him and regarding the created beings by betrayal, and that abandonment was for them a severance and foolishness, it became a test for minds and a criterion for opinions by which the valid is known from the invalid. So it was as if it was said: What did they say? And it was said: ﴿They said, O Shu'ayb﴾. They named him by his name out of rudeness and harshness, and they denied him while mocking his prayers: ﴿Does your prayer command you﴾ meaning: does it cause you to act like one who always commands us ﴿to abandon what our forefathers worshipped﴾ meaning: in a manner of persistence ﴿or﴾ to abandon ﴿to do﴾ meaning: always ﴿in our wealth what we wish﴾ of cutting the dirham and dinar and corrupting transactions and gambling and similar things that cause corruption to wealth, meaning that what you command us with does not align with the path of reason. So what you command you do not do except what we see you doing of this thing which you call prayer, meaning that it is from the valley of: your action for prayer; and the root of the word prayer - with a waw and a ya, both hamzated and non-hamzated in all its forms - revolves around connection. Prayer is for the connection of the servant with his Lord, and likewise supplication and seeking forgiveness. The prayers of the Jews are their synagogues which gather them, and the prayer: the middle of the back and its gathering and around the tail as well, and the one who prays from the horses: the one who follows the preceding one. And the male animal has prayed - if it carried upon the female. And the voice of the man and his sound: you have blamed him, as if you have attached to him the blame. And the connection is clear in that, and it is as if it is the truth from which all meanings of the root have branched out. And an explanation of that will come when He, the Most High, says: ﴿in the mornings and the evenings﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 15] in the Surah of Ar-Ra'd, if Allah wills. So the meaning of the verse at that time is: as for what you are suffering from the prayers: the real ones with pillars, and the spiritual ones from supplication and seeking forgiveness and all acts of righteousness that carry on the types of connection that prohibit every severance that commands you to openly sever ties with our forefathers while considering their presence and witnessing what we do that contradicts their interests and by abandoning the growth of our wealth through reduction, and this is with the contradiction of the actions of the forefathers, it is wastefulness; so it is foolishness - and their doubt revolved in both matters around imitating the forefathers and exonerating them from error due to the possibility that there may be a reason for their actions that was hidden from them. And it increased in wealth by the assumption of wastefulness - so you have become by our supplication to both matters at that time a caller to the opposite of what you are engaged in. ﴿Indeed, you﴾ then ﴿are﴾ alone ﴿the forbearing﴾ in your contentment with what angers the relatives ﴿the wise﴾ in the waste of wealth. They want by this, as they claimed - to strip him of everything that is attributed to him without them from these two superior attributes by what their foolishness has led them to believe is a conclusive evidence against him, and they meant by that attributing him to foolishness and misguidance in a mocking manner.
