And when their sight after polytheism was limited to wealth, and His prohibition of what He prohibited necessitated its destruction in their claim, they were as if they said: If we follow you in what you say, our wealth will perish or diminish, and our conditions will deteriorate, so nothing will remain for us? He said: ﴿The Remnant of Allah﴾ meaning: the favor of the Most High King, who possesses the attributes of perfection, and His blessing in your wealth and all your conditions, and His keeping His sight upon you necessitating (p-355) His pardon, which is the fruit of following His command, ﴿is better for you﴾ than what you think is an increase through loss and injustice. This is because the remnant of a thing is what remains of it, and it can also mean continuity, from 'abqa' meaning to keep, and 'istabqaytu fulanan' - if you pardon his sin, as if that sin necessitated the extinction of his affection or made him perish in your sight. So if you keep him, you have left what was necessary. And they say: I see you keeping this with your sight - if he is looking at it - as said by Imam Abu Abdullah al-Qazzaz in his comprehensive diwan. And at the end of the surah, there will be an explanation of what the material revolves around.

And when the goodness of what justice keeps from appearances is in a place that is not hidden from one with understanding, He left it and clarified its condition by saying: ﴿If you are﴾ meaning: by nature and disposition ﴿believers﴾ meaning: firmly rooted in faith, indicating that its goodness for the non-believer is based on no foundation, so it is not beneficial except in this world. It is a non-existence due to the quickness of disappearance and departure from it and migration. And the conjunction 'wa' indicates something not mentioned that the meaning is: So believe, acting upon what I have commanded you, so that you may attain goodness, for I am but a warner ﴿and I am not﴾. And He preceded what they might think of His intention for superiority, negating it by saying: ﴿Upon you﴾ and He immersed in negation, saying: ﴿A Preserver﴾ I know all your deeds [and your conditions] and I am able to restrain you from what may lead to corruption; and the origin of the remnant is leaving something from something that has passed.
