Commentary
Then he followed that with what indicates the comprehensiveness of knowledge and power together, saying: "And what" and he immersed in the generality by saying: "from creature" and indicated that the benefit from wealth is specific to the people of the lower world by saying: "in the earth" meaning: whether it is small or large "except upon Allah" meaning: the Most High King who alone has the encompassing knowledge, not others. "Its provision" meaning: its sustenance and what it benefits from and lives by, according to what He has obligated upon Himself, [to ensure its arrival and to encourage reliance upon Him], for the favors upon every soul by what it cannot live except by and what suits it alone during its lifetime is more precise than what has passed in knowledge with the inclusion of the completeness of power. The verse, with that, looks towards the encouragement of the verse: "And seek forgiveness from your Lord" [Hud: 3] so the intended meaning is: be sincere in your worship of Him and do not slacken in your worship of Him due to being preoccupied with provision, for He has guaranteed it for you and He is All-Knowing of every soul, so do not fear that He forgets anyone.
And he said: "And in the earth" to encompass what walks upon its surface and what is in its depths from worms and similar things which none knows except Him. I have witnessed inside a stone from the shore of the sea of Cyprus, which is very hard, as if it were white agate, a worm that has what it eats. And the virtuous 'Izz al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Takruri al-Kutubiyy informed me that he has witnessed more than once inside stones cut from the mountain of Egypt, worms that have what they eat from green grass and what they drink from water; and he pointed out by saying: "And He knows its resting place" meaning: the place where it settles "and its deposit" meaning: the place where it is deposited before settling, whether from a backbone or womb or egg, or after it from a grave or an open land or otherwise, according to what His knowledge encompasses of the details of (p-238) the dwellings and movements, whether they are of them or what will be from all of that which confounds thought and astonishes the intellects. Then he made the separation of the verse what is of the utmost greatness with the truth, which is: "Everything" meaning: from that "is in a clear book" for not everything that the servant knows can be written down nor is everything that he writes clear in such a way that whenever he wants to uncover it, he finds what he seeks, and when he finds it, it is understandable to him; and the creature is the living being whose nature is to creep; and the resting place is the place where something settles, which is its abode and the place it returns to; and the deposit is the meaning placed in its abode like the child in the womb and the sperm in the back. And He, glorified and exalted is He, has placed in His Book what has been mentioned as a ruling from it regarding what the angels have in it of lessons when compared to what will be from the matters written before their existence.
