Commentary
And when their story was completed in this wonderful manner and style, Allah, the Exalted, said, adding to His saying: ﴿These are from the news of the unseen﴾ [Hud: 49] ﴿And these are 'Aad﴾, meaning: the story of the distant and detestable people, which you, nor your people, nor the people of the Scripture, knew in this detail. It was only denied by the people of the Scripture because they only know what has an origin from their prophets. And this story and the story of Thamud are not in the Torah nor anything from the scriptures of their prophets. I asked some of their scholars, and I did not find anything of its knowledge, nor a single letter, nor had they heard of 'Aad or Hud. The summary of their story is that they ﴿disbelieved﴾, meaning: they denied out of stubbornness and contempt ﴿the signs of their Lord﴾, who was gracious to them, ﴿and they disobeyed His messengers﴾. For whoever disobeys one of them has indeed disobeyed all, due to their agreement on one matter and their equality in the absolute miracle. ﴿And they followed﴾, meaning: with all their effort, ﴿the command of every tyrant﴾, meaning: a powerful oppressor who forces others to do what he wants. This indicates that there is no excuse in the essence of religion in any way; for the secrets of the hearts are known only to Allah. [So anyone can oppose the tyrant in this matter.] ﴿Stubborn﴾, meaning: a tyrant who does not accept the truth in any way. So they were destroyed, and their tyranny did not prevent them, nor did their stubbornness and arrogance benefit them.
