And when the exception from his family was in his saying: "Except for him upon whom the word has preceded" [Hud: 40], it is permissible that it is intended only for his wife. Thus, the salvation of his son would be permissible. What is with the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, from excessive compassion for creation, especially relatives, drives them to strive for their righteousness as long as there is a reason for that, as has been previously mentioned in His saying, the Exalted: "If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them" [At-Tawbah: 80]. This is because the wings of creation are broken, their hands are short, their affairs are weak, and their condition is miserable. The slightest humiliation will lead them to loss. As for the station of the Truth, it is vast, and His affair is great, and His command is high. No deficiency can reach Him in any way, nor can harm approach Him, nor can weakness afflict His matter. Since that is the case, Noah, peace be upon him, asked for the salvation of his son as He informed about him, the Exalted, in His saying: "And Noah called to his Lord" [i.e., the One who had accustomed him with abundant goodness]. And He, glorified is He, indicated by the conjunction 'fa' without bringing the beginning of the interpreter for the call that what is mentioned here from Noah's call, peace be upon him, is part of his calls. This mentioned is arranged and follows something of it that precedes it, the closest of which is what He guided him to in Surah Al-Mu'minun, and His saying after this is a response to him: "O Noah, descend with peace from Us" [Hud: 48]. Thus, the estimation of the speech is: He said: My Lord, grant me a blessed abode - and what was estimated for him from the speech "So he said" means: as a consequence of what led him to that from the mercy of prophethood, and the compassion of fatherhood, and the nature of humanity, exposing himself to the breezes of mercy and the inclinations of pardon; or the 'fa' is a detail for the general of "called" like what is in: "He performed ablution, so he washed."
"My Lord, indeed my son" means: the one who drowned "is of my family" meaning: and You have commanded me to carry my family, and that command is open to the indication of the desire for their salvation "and indeed Your promise is true" meaning: complete in their salvation except for whom the word has preceded. And she, the disbelieving woman, knew that "and You are the most just of judges" because You are the most knowledgeable of them. And whoever is more knowledgeable is more just. So you know that Your saying: "Except for him upon whom the word has preceded" [Hud: 40] is valid by excluding her alone. If my son is among those who are saved, then bring him to me; and if this supplication is at the time of the waves intervening between them, the meaning is: So do not destroy him.
