Commentary

And when the command came to him regarding that, he hastened to comply. He gathered those whom Allah had commanded him to [gather] to the ship after he had prepared it for them. He said, "Ride!" And when the circumstance was predominant over the ship, he said, "In it," meaning the ship. And when he commanded them to board, they boarded. He resumed his saying, or he commanded them to board while saying, "In the name of Allah," meaning the One who has complete encompassing. "Its course and its anchorage," meaning its running and its anchoring, and their place and time. Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Humayd al-A'raj, and Ismail ibn Mujalid narrated from Asim with a broken 'ra' and 'sin' in a pure manner, followed by two pure 'ya's, on the basis that the two names are attributes of majesty. Then he explained their salvation by the running and anchoring, acknowledging that there is no salvation except by His pardon, by saying, "Indeed, my Lord," meaning the One who has done good to me by what He has decreed for me in this matter and others. He emphasized this further to comfort the hearts of those with him, informing them that no one will truly appreciate Allah as He deserves, and that the servant can only encompass forgiveness. He said, "The Forgiving," meaning the One who covers mistakes and slips. "The Merciful," meaning the One who honors whom He wills. So they boarded it and continued sailing in it, saying, "In the name of Allah."
