And when the negation of that was general for worldly virtue, and the description of having little in hand is only harmful if its owner asks others, he negated this necessary blame from himself by saying, responding to their denial of virtue from him and his followers, that he might want from them a worldly reward: "And O my people," as an appeal to them, "I do not ask you" meaning: at any time, "for it" meaning the warning, just as one takes from you who warns you of something he wants from you, who warns you of something he wants for you of some things you dislike in your worldly matters, until the consequence of that is that you accuse me of it. "What I ask of you is nothing" meaning: what "I do not seek except from Allah" meaning: the One who has glory and honor, for in His hand are all the treasures. And he pointed out by this that he has no desire for any worldly gain that would repel the invited one from him, so it is necessary to believe him. And therein is a teaching for the response to the words of Quraysh: 'If only a treasure were cast upon him' - as will come clearer than that after the story of Yusuf, peace be upon him, in his saying: "And I do not ask you for it any reward" [Yusuf: 104], because these stories are like a single thing, consecutive in clarifying the truth of this Qur'an and the consolation in following the messengers in patience upon delivering all the message, along with what that necessitates of great lessons and wonderful wisdoms. So when the purpose from them united with their succession, their separate parts united.
And when the expression of the lowliness of the follower is something that repels the people of the world from that follower, he clarified to them that his state is not like their state, and that he is gentle towards those who believe in him, compassionate towards them, even if he is delayed in the world, deprived of it out of fear of Allah, whom they followed in it. So he said: "And I am not" and he emphasized the negation by saying: "of those who drive away those who believe" meaning: those who acknowledge with their tongues belief; then he justified that by saying, confirming their denial: "that they will meet their Lord" [Al-Baqarah: 46] meaning: the One who is good to them after creating them and arranging them for their guidance. So if I were to drive them away, they would complain to Him, and I do not see for you any reason to refer to driving them away or in anything of what you responded to me with. "But I see you" meaning: I know you with a knowledge that is like sight, "a people who act foolishly" [meaning] you do the actions of the people of ignorance, so you deny the truthful one and you reproach the believers with what does not concern them, and you forget the meeting with Allah and you place things in other than their places. And in his expression of: "you act foolishly" instead of "you are ignorant" is an indication that ignorance is renewed for them and it is not their habit, appealing to them towards forbearance.
