Commentary

And when there is in this an encouragement to remain steadfast in Islam and to enter into it, and a warning against neglecting it, it is the right of the listener to hasten towards it. And it is the right of the Muslim to turn away from the world due to its bad consequences. And the greatest hindrance for the polytheists from believing is the overwhelming nature of worldly affairs upon them. Therefore, they have been obstinate regarding hoarding. He indicated the consequences of that by saying: "Whoever intends" meaning: by his intention and his deeds of kindness towards people and others, "the worldly life" meaning: and is pleased with it despite its lowliness compared to the Hereafter with its greatness and honor, "and its adornment" then he clings to it due to its presence and forgets what necessitates turning away from it due to its perishability and its troubles. "We will fulfill" meaning: we will deliver to them "their deeds" meaning: their recompense "in it" meaning: in the world with honor, wealth, and similar things. "And they in it" meaning: in the deeds or the world "will not be wronged" meaning: nothing will be diminished from their recompense in it. As for their bodies, souls, and religions, all of them are diminished in both abodes. And in the two statements is an indication of the reason for the withholding of punishment from them during the period of their respite despite their evil deeds.
