Commentary
And when the least degree of fabrication is for a person to come with words other than his own without knowledge, and their inability to oppose is a decisive proof that they have not reached anything of His words, glorified and exalted is He, without knowledge, nor have they found a counterpart to come to them with something like it. It is established certainly that this Qur'an is not fabricated. So He, glorified and exalted is He, said addressing everyone [contrary to what is in the stories], indicating the clarity of the matter [especially in fabrication in the eyes of everyone], and that the polytheists have reached from the humiliation of being rebuked by the challenge, time after time, and their falsehood against themselves in that arena, again and again, to a point of inability where they cannot even utter a word in that regard: ﴿So if they do not respond to you﴾ meaning: they do not seek your response and do not find it, ﴿then know﴾ O people altogether ﴿that what has been revealed﴾ meaning: [what] has occurred in the revelation of this Qur'an specifically [is not ambiguous] ﴿by the knowledge of Allah﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses everything in power and knowledge, due to the fact that Muhammad is one of them, the custom prevents him from stumbling without all the people of the earth upon what his Lord has not permitted him of His words, let alone that he should invent it. It is possible that the pronoun 'they respond' refers to 'whoever' 'whoever you are able to' and 'to you' for the polytheists, and likewise in His saying: 'then know' and 'you' ﴿and that﴾ meaning: and know that ﴿there is no deity except Him﴾ for if there were another deity with Him, it would have been able to match Him in bringing forth something like His words, and therein is a threat and despair from their deities to save them from the punishment of Allah. And when this is a decisive proof of the establishment of the Qur'an, it caused His saying (p-251) to be encouraging and intimidating: ﴿So are you Muslims?﴾ meaning: submissive in complete submission.
