And when He, glorified and exalted is He, excluded from the transgressors with the nature of those who are reckless in desire, those who adorn themselves with the composure of patience that arises from the dignity of knowledge that yields good deeds, and he, blessings and peace be upon him, was the leader of the patient ones. What has passed from their sayings and actions is like their saying: "What holds him back?" [Hud: 8] And they would twist their chests as reasons for the tightness of his chest, so perhaps there was a suspicion for their hope that he, blessings and peace be upon him, would leave some of what was revealed to him regarding the faults of their deities, the misguidance of their forefathers, and the ridicule of their dreams, and other matters that were difficult for them, hoping for their acceptance or fearing their rejection. For they would say: We do not see him mentioning those who oppose his religion from the Jews and Christians like he mentions us with evil. Allah, the Most High, said, explaining that and prohibiting it in the form of news: "So perhaps you will leave some of what..." And when the revelation had become known to them, even if they disputed it, he established for the action his saying: "It is revealed to you" like the warning and the ridicule of their forefathers' dreams. "And your chest is tight with it" means: with that part, "your chest" fearing their rejection of it if you convey it to them. Then he explained that by saying: "That they say" out of obstinacy and opposition; for if they had been seeking guidance, one sign would have sufficed them. "Why has a treasure not been sent down to him" so that he could be self-sufficient and devote himself to what he wants, [and they established it for the action because the aim was the absolute attainment of it]. And they would belittle the Qur'an due to their knowledge that it is the greatest sign, so they would not count it as a sign out of obstinacy and defiance. "Or has a messenger come with him?" meaning: to support his words and to bear witness for him. So the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, would feel tightness in his chest from such words of theirs, and it would weigh heavily on him to convey to them what they would not accept and would mock him for. So Allah moved him with this to deliver the message, whatever it contained. Thus, the meaning was: If it is established that a person is predisposed to such fluctuations, then do not be a place of their hope that you would leave what angers them of what We command you with, [but be] among the patient ones. The people of the narratives said: When the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, began to proclaim Islam to his people and declared it as Allah commanded him, his people did not distance themselves from him and did not respond to him until he mentioned their deities and criticized them. When he did that, they magnified him and opposed him and all agreed against him except for whom Allah protected. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, "The polytheists said to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: Bring us a book that does not contain any insults to our deities."
And when this context made clear the denial of what detracts from the warning, it was as if it was said to him: This hoped-for hope is denied. The greatest purpose of the message is the warning, for it is the difficult one for souls. As for the glad tidings, anyone who stands can convey it. That is why it was said: ﴿Indeed, you are only a warner﴾. So convey to them what you have been sent with, and they will say to you what Allah has decreed for them. So do not let it trouble you [for you are only responsible for the conveying], and you are not a guardian over them to compel them to return to obedience by force and dominance. Rather, the guardian is Allah, the doer of what He wills ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning the One who has complete encompassing knowledge.
And when the context is for His encompassing knowledge, glorified is He, He preceded His saying: ﴿Over all things﴾ from them and from others, and from their acceptance and rejection, and from your protection from them and from others. ﴿A guardian﴾ [So He manages affairs according to what He knows of wisdom. If He wills, He brings what they asked for, and if He does not will, He does not bring it, and there is no objection to Him]. So place your trust in Him in every matter, even if it is difficult. And perhaps He limited it to warning because the situation necessitates it, for they are deserving of it, and it is what they are enticed to abandon by their desire for reconciliation through turning away from what necessitates opposition. And the heart is the dwelling place of the heart; it is likened to the chief of the people and the high-ranking in the assembly due to the honor of his status over others among the people. And the treasure is what is buried, and it has become in religion a description of blame for every wealth from which the obligatory zakat has not been given, even if it is not buried. [And the verse from the interlocking: first denied his ability ﷺ to bring what they asked for, as evidence of the ability of his sender regarding that and others secondly. And he affirmed the guardianship secondly as evidence for the denial of it first].
