Commentary
And when these reports are of the utmost warning, known only to one who is advanced in knowledge, it is certainly known that he ﷺ did not bring them except from Allah. This is evident from the knowledge that he did not acquire knowledge nor did he associate with a scholar at any time. This, along with the types of eloquence it contains and the aspects of fluency it encompasses, and its allusions to the beauty of its contexts from the turns of wisdom and the benefit of its details from the arts of knowledge, is why it deserves to be referred to with a term of distance, indicating the elevation of its rank and the greatness of the matter. So Allah, the Exalted, said: "That" meaning the great news and the serious matter "from the news of the towns." And He emphasized this meaning with the word 'news' because it is a report of great significance, and from it is the Prophet. He indicated by using the present tense in His saying: "We relate it to you" that just as we have narrated it to you in this context for the previously mentioned purpose, we will narrate it to you for other purposes in the arts of eloquence and the turns of judgment, as you will see when we recount it. Then He indicated - by what He informed of its resolution in His saying: "from it" meaning the towns "standing and harvested" - that just as you have heard what we narrated to you about its matter with your ear and you have comprehended it with your heart, you perceive it with your eye by witnessing its buildings and its remnants standing and harvested, meaning advanced, with nothing remaining of its structure except for some of its walls.
