Commentary
﴿And if We cause him to taste blessings﴾ from Our bounty.
And when his taking possession of the loan is a natural disposition for him, he does not cease from it except by a great assistance from Allah. This is indicated by what He made understood, that if he were to have a long life in hardship, then he attained a state (p-243) that he is pleased with after the time of hardship, whether he hastens to believe that it is the original state for him and that it will never depart from him, nor will any type of harm mix with it, nor will anything from impurity mingle with its clarity. He said, indicating the connection of the time of hardship with the saying of removing the diminisher from the circumstance: ﴿After hardship﴾ meaning: severe poverty harmful to his body. And He did not ascribe the touching to Him, glorified and exalted is He, as He did in the blessings, teaching etiquette, and said: ﴿It touched him﴾ meaning: by what his hands have earned. ﴿He will surely say﴾ with the proximity of his time of hardship, lightly and rashly: ﴿The evils have departed﴾ meaning: everything that harms me ﴿from me﴾. And His saying: ﴿Indeed﴾, the pronoun in it refers to man, meaning that man. It is a general statement known by immersion, meaning that every man ﴿is certainly joyful and boastful﴾ meaning: he is beyond the limit in his joy, excessively boastful about others with every blessing that Allah has bestowed upon him. [He does not possess harm for himself nor prevent it from that]. Therefore, his saying is connected [to it], excluding from the intended human being the name of the genus: ﴿Except for those who are patient﴾ in times of difficulties and the removal of blessings, hoping for their Lord and having good thoughts of Him due to their faith which necessitates their adherence to the law. ﴿And they do righteous deeds﴾ [meaning] from words of gratitude and actions when blessings occur. They are always occupied with their Lord in gratitude and patience. [And they are those whom He, glorified and exalted is He, completed His blessings upon, and created them in the best form. And they are fewer than few due to their great struggle against their souls (p-244) in what they were created with from desires and other than them and their devils.]
And when it was as if it was said: So what is with them that they are not like that! The context produced their praise, so he said: ﴿Those﴾ meaning the high in rank ﴿for them is forgiveness﴾ if a slip occurs from them ﴿and a great reward﴾ for their patience and gratitude; and tasting is: taking something with the mouth to perceive the taste, just as smelling is the contact of something with the nose to perceive the scent; and pulling is: removing something from another that was attached to it, like uprooting or peeling; and despair is: the cutting off that something will not be, and it is the opposite of hope. And one who is despairing is: one who has much despair, and it is a blame because it is due to ignorance of the vastness of mercy which necessitates strong hope in all that is permissible to do in wisdom; and blessing is: a favor whose effect appears on its possessor, just as hardship is an affliction that manifests itself, because it has been brought forth in the manner of apparent conditions of redness and blindness, along with what is in its meaning of exaggeration; and the evil is: that which is bad from the aspect of repulsion of nature or intellect, and here it is illness and poverty and the like; and joy is: the opening of the heart with that which one delights in; and the saying of al-Baghawi is: it is a pleasure in the heart by attaining what is desired, and it is greater than the pleasures of the senses; and pride is: boasting by enumerating virtues; and patience is: restraining [the self] from what is desired of prohibitions and the like, and patience upon the bitterness of truth leads to success in the Hereafter along with what is in it of beauty in this world; and the great is one that the measure of others is less than it; and the many is a gathering that exceeds the number of others.
