Commentary

And when what was negated from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, does not include the past, and the absence of participation in any way during a time of times is more indicative of innocence and more conducive to the continuity of disdain. They used to consider his silence, blessings and peace be upon him, about them - before prophethood - as worship. They were not limited to the worship of their idols which they had taken, but when they left the sanctuary and settled in a place, they looked for a stone to admire and worship it. If they did not find a stone, they gathered some dirt and poured some milk on it and worshipped it as long as they were in that place. This was one of the most severe things that could be criticized regarding the absence of youth and that there was no deity for them to assist. He said, pointing out all of this: 'And I am not a worshipper' meaning, characterized by worship of 'what you have worshipped' meaning, in what has passed. It was never correct for me to be described as a worshipper of that from the beginning of your time until these hours of ours. So how do you hope for that from me while I have not done it, neither before prophethood nor was it ever in my nature.
