Commentary
And when the intention was to inform them of the disavowal from them in every way, and that he does not care for them in any way because he is protected from them, he said, announcing the truth of his news, exalted is He, at the end of Al-Kawthar, from where he means by saying that with certainty of disavowal they cannot have any kind of effective confrontation. He begins with the disavowal from his side because it is the most important: ﴿I do not worship﴾ meaning now and not in the future, because 'no' is for the future and 'what' is for the present, thus they said. The apparent expression of Sibawayh in his saying: 'will not' negates his saying 'he will do' and 'nor' negates his saying 'he does'. It has not occurred that it occurs for the present tense which has not occurred, whether it is very close to the present or not, as it was transmitted from him at the beginning of Al-Baqarah at ﴿And you will not do﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 24]. The fact that our utterance of this speech hardly becomes realized until a time passes and it becomes [future], thus he expressed with 'no' without 'what' as a sign that he, glorified and exalted is He, establishes him on the straight path, and does not grant them victory over it - a sign from the signs of prophethood.
And when there was in their objects of worship that which does not have intellect, and the aim was to belittle everything they worshipped besides Allah, he expressed with 'what' and said: ﴿What do you worship﴾ meaning now and in the coming time besides Allah from the apparent and hidden objects of worship in any way of worship, in secret or in public, because it is not suitable for worship in any way.
