And when it was the case that one who possesses this attribute does not regard others, like the animals, he means by saying that the intended meaning of negligence here is the neglect of it when alone by leaving it in a physical and meaningful sense, and when gathered, by corrupting the meaning: ﴿Those who﴾ that is, with all of their inner selves ﴿show off﴾ that is, in their prayers and others, they show the people that they are doing good so that the people see them and they receive praise from them and kindness towards them, even by withholding what they deserve from the sword against them, not for the hope of reward nor for the fear of punishment from Allah, glorified and exalted is He. Therefore, they abandon prayer when they are away from the people.
