Commentary

And when their destruction was caused by this target, and that was by the action of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, the All-Powerful over what He wills, for He is the One who created the effect, certainly, for something like it does not arise from the destruction that occurred. He said: ﴿So He made them﴾, meaning your Lord, who is gracious to you with His grace towards your people for your sake, by that ﴿like eaten chaff﴾, meaning the leaves of crops that have fallen into it, which is that the worms eat it and hollow it out, for the stone would come to the head and pierce through it with its heat and the intensity of the impact, everything that passed by it until it exits from the rear and becomes the place of its hollowing out blackened due to its fiery nature, or it ate a seed and remained empty of it, or a grain that was eaten by the animals and inherited it. However, it came according to what is in accordance with the manners of the Qur'an, like His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿They both used to eat food﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 75]. And this destruction in its admiration is one of the meanings of the interrogative confirmation at its beginning, for its two ends embraced each other, and its end wrapped around its beginning - and Allah knows best what He intends.
