Commentary
And when their habit was to prevent from acting by placing a great piece of wood called the muqattarah, in which there are rings to bind the man, so that his owner could not move after that. He described their punishment with a state of the pronoun 'upon them': 'in' [that is] while they are bound in 'columns' with two openings and two vowels, the plural of 'column' 'mumdaddah' meaning extended, as if it is placed on the ground. So it is in the utmost confinement, and the one bound by it cannot devise any means in its matter, for it is an affirmation of their despair from exiting by the binding after being locked in. And this is the greatest woe and the most severe punishment. For its end has returned to its beginning, and its joint is more tightly bound to its connector - and Allah is the One who grants success to the right, and to Him is the return and the destination.
