(p-243) The purpose of Surah Al-Humazah is to clarify the greatest party that is the loser, which is overwhelmed by the competition for more. Its loss becomes evident on the Day of the Calamity, the lowering and raising. Its name, Al-Humazah, clearly indicates this. 'In the name of Allah,' who has the fullness of might and is the just ruler. 'The Most Gracious,' who has encompassed His grace to the people of stinginess and those who are generous. 'The Most Merciful,' who has completed His grace upon whom He wills of His servants, and has favored them with excellence.

* *For what is between the saved and the two divisions of mankind in this age, and it concludes with patience. The complete longing for the attributes of the doomed has occurred. He said, clarifying for those who have gone astray and the most miserable of them, that patience upon his harm is in the utmost severity, so that what he has prepared for him of punishment becomes a source of solace for the patient: ﴿Woe﴾ means a great destruction indeed ﴿to every slanderer﴾ that is, one who has made slandering a habit because it is a fixed trait in his nature. Likewise, ﴿and backbiter﴾. Slander is breaking, like defeat, and backbiting is stabbing - this is their essence. Then they were specified with breaking the honor of people and stabbing them. Ibn Hisham said in his Tahdhib of Sirah: The slanderer is the one who openly insults a man, and rolls his eyes at him and slanders him. The backbiter is the one who criticizes people secretly - this is the end of it. Al-Baghawi said: The essence of slander is breaking and biting something violently. What indicates habitual action is the form of the verb with a dammah and a fatha, as it is said, 'laughter' for one who laughs frequently until it becomes a habit for him. The verb form with sukoon is for the object, which is the one whom people slander and backbite. It has been recited this way, and it is as if it refers to one who intentionally comes with what he slanders and backbites with, so he becomes a subject of mockery that people laugh at - and Allah knows best.

Imam Abu Ja'far ibn Al-Zubair said: When He, glorified and exalted is He, said ﴿Indeed, mankind is in loss﴾ [Al-Asr: 2], He followed it with an example of [one who mentions his shortcomings and deficiencies and his delusion, and his belief in his perfection until he criticizes others, and his reliance on what he has gathered of wealth, thinking that it will immortalize him and save him. All of this is the essence of deficiency, which is the state of mankind, and it is mentioned in the Surah before. He, exalted is He, said ﴿Woe to every slanderer, backbiter﴾, so the Surah opened with mentioning what has been prepared for him of punishment as a recompense for his slandering and backbiting, which has completed his envy. The slanderer is the one who criticizes and stabs, and the backbiter is similar to him. Then He, exalted is He, mentioned what he has and his abode by saying: ﴿Indeed, he will be thrown into the Crusher﴾ [Al-Humazah: 4], meaning he will be cast into the Fire as a recompense for his delusion and his stabbing - this is the end.
