Commentary
And when the ruling on the genus is a ruling on the whole, because they have nothing from themselves except that, and among them are those whom Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has saved from what human beings are naturally inclined to by making him in the best form and protecting him from deviation with what is in him of deficiencies, He has excluded them, glorified and exalted is He, because they are very few compared to the people of loss. So He said, indicating by the exception that the souls are inclined to evil and are perpetually attached to idleness and amusement. The sincere one is one in a thousand, as mentioned in the authentic hadith, "Except for those who believe." That is, they have established faith, which is the affirmation of what is known with certainty to be brought by the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding His oneness, glorified and exalted is He, and the affirmation of His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day. And perhaps the wisdom of expressing in the past tense is to encourage entering into the religion, even at the lowest levels, and the good news for whoever does that, with its condition, is salvation from loss.
And when man is a speaking animal, and the perfection of his animality is in the practical power for movement by will, not by the demand of base animalistic desire, He, the Most High, said: "And they acted," meaning, affirming what they acknowledged of faith, "the righteous deeds," meaning this genus, which is following the commands and avoiding the prohibitions in acts of worship like prayer and in customs like trade. Thus, they were Muslims by this after they were believers, and they purchased the Hereafter with this world, so they were not distracted by the abundance of wealth. Therefore, they succeeded in eternal life and everlasting happiness, and nothing of loss reached them.
And when man, after his perfection in himself through deeds, is not free from absolute loss except by completing others, then he will be an inheritor because the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, were sent for completion. And the religion does not stand, and if it stands, it does not complete except by enjoining what is good and forbidding what is wrong, which arises from the light of the heart. And this can only be achieved through gathering. He said, specifying what has entered into righteous deeds, indicating its greatness: "And they advised one another," meaning, they advised each other with the tongue of state or speech: "with the truth," meaning the established matter, which is everything that the Shari'ah has ruled to be correct. It cannot be correct in any way by negating it from a saying, action, belief, or any other deed or omission. Thus, they were doing good, and the completion in practical power is by bringing about good.
(p-240) And when man is inclined towards deficiency, the doer of that good is exposed to hatred from the people of enmity, who are the majority in every time. Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And they enjoin﴾ because man is energized by admonition and is benefited by sight and speech ﴿with patience﴾, meaning the patience that arises from the purification of the soul to act in obedience to Allah by establishing the truth and abolishing falsehood, and negating it, and the one who establishes it. And regarding what results from that due to harm by avoiding evils until death, which is a means leading to the abode of peace. They were thus completing the practical strength while preserving what preceded it from the knowledge. And that is the wisdom of acts of worship, for the wisdom of a thing is the goal and the intended benefit from it. Here, it is two matters: external, which is Paradise, and internal, which is the light that brings one closer to the truth, glorified and exalted is He. The expression of enjoining is chosen as a reference to gentleness in commanding what is good and forbidding what is evil, and to use softness to the utmost effort. Patience is the essence of man, his secret, his purity, his cream, and his essence, which cannot be reached except by the pressure of man on himself and compelling it to perform acts of obedience and overpowering it to adhere to the Sunnah and the congregation until patience becomes for it, through training, a habit and a craft. The last of it embraces the first of it, and it connects its joints to its connections. (p-241) And it is fourteen words indicating that in the fourteenth year of Prophethood, permission will be granted for jihad, which is the head of the matter of enjoining good by action to manifest the truth. And it is the year of migration in which the Battle of Badr took place, and its light and honor spread, and its glory and victory gathered. So if you add to it four words, the Basmala, it would equal in number to the year five of the migration, in which the Battle of Badr, the appointed time, and the Battle of the Confederates took place. In both, the utmost patience was exhibited by the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and then by those who agreed with him from the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, to manifest the truth and correctness. For in Badr, they were weakened by the caravan of Abd al-Qais or by Naim ibn Mas'ud and the agreement of the hypocrites, and they were frightened until terror and failure almost overwhelmed them. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said:
By Allah, I will certainly go out, even if no one goes out with me. And Allah revealed about this, 'Those to whom the people said,
