Commentary

Indeed, man, this type which is the noblest of types, is in the best form, just as the era is the essence of time. The era is for extracting the essences of things. Truly, they are in loss, meaning a deficiency according to their efforts in their desires and their spending of their times in their purposes. This is due to their natural inclination towards the present and their disregard for the absent, and their being deceived by the fleeting. The loss is more general than being little or great, according to the diversity of people into the wise and the foolish. Whoever is a disbeliever is in denial, and whoever is a sinful believer is in loss if he is excessive in sin; otherwise, he is in absolute loss. This is indicated by the abstract source. In this, there is a reference to the knowledge of the need for sending messengers to clarify what is pleasing to Allah in beliefs, acts of worship, and customs, in faith, Islam, and the continuation of that, so that its doer is among the people of the right hand and its abandoner is among the companions of the left hand.

And the scholar Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: When Allah, the Exalted, said: "The abundance of wealth has distracted you" [Al-Takathur: 1], this includes a reference to the short-sightedness of man and the limitation of his perception to the immediate without the ultimate, in which is his success and prosperity. This is due to his distance from the knowledge of what is required by nature. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant [Al-Ahzab: 72]. He informed, glorified and exalted is He, that this is the nature of man, as he is human. Thus, He said: "By the time, indeed, man is in loss." The shortcoming is his nature, injustice is his disposition, and ignorance is his innate quality. Therefore, it is fitting that the abundance of wealth distracts him, and Allah does not place in him the spirit of faith, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds [Al-Asr: 3] until the end of it. These are the ones: "Their trade and sale do not distract them from the remembrance of Allah" [An-Nur: 37].
