Commentary
And when the listener directed all of his thought towards understanding its conditions, he said: What is its estimation? It will be ﴿the Day when﴾ meaning a being as if it is a creation ﴿the people﴾ meaning those whose condition is (p-222) the multitude of them and the diversity of their essences, their conditions, their ranks, their measures, and their spreading after the scattering of the graves and the obtaining of what is in the chests ﴿like the locusts﴾ meaning the small grasshoppers because they spread out and rush towards the fire, or it is a bird other than that which has no blood, falling into the fire and is neither a mosquito nor a fly. And Hamzah al-Karmani said: He likened them to the locusts that fly from here and there and do not follow a single path, and they are a rabble attracted by the lamp. And others said: The aspect of similarity is the multitude, the spreading, the weakness, the humiliation, and the fluttering towards the caller from every side just as the locusts flutter. And the great rushing into the fire and the riding of some of them [upon one another] and the wave of some of them upon others from the intensity of the horror, as He, the Most High, said ﴿They are like locusts spread out﴾ [Al-Qamar: 7] ﴿scattered﴾ meaning the spread and the dispersal.
