And when what has passed - from the verses of this clear Surah - indicates that whoever is destined for misery will not benefit from witnessing the signs, it serves to negate doubt about them and affirm certainty in their meanings with the previous evidence regarding those meanings, until it concludes with the condemnation of whoever acts with doubt after what necessitates certainty from knowledge has come. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, was as mentioned at the end of the previous one, the most compassionate of creation, especially towards the Arabs, particularly towards his people among them. The recommendation had emerged from the Divine Presence for him in accordance with his nature of exerting effort in being gentle with them. This was worthy of stirring the human disposition to wish for a response to what they propose. The request for that after weaning from it is among the acts of doubt in general, so it was intended to completely divert the soul from it, even if only by the thought in the mind. Thus it was said, causing what preceded it: "So if you are" meaning: O most merciful of creation, "in doubt" and he did not mean by this statement its reality - and Allah knows best - but rather to strengthen certainty and affirm it, and to make it firm and supported by the fact that this matter has been decreed and completed, so it does not allow for reconsideration. This is because the meaning is that their steadfastness in misery is a matter that is known only by us, and that is by one of two matters: either through the trustworthy Gabriel with what he brings of revelation from us, fresh and preserved from alteration, so there is no distortion in it nor change, or through the people of the Book regarding their Prophets - and in that there is a descent of two degrees with the allowance of fear and alteration, and this is something that no one of high ambition and noble soul would accept. The meaning is: I have informed you that the verses do not increase the decreed misery except in misguidance, and I am knowledgeable of that. "And no one informs you like the All-Knowing" [Fatir: 14]. So do not seek my response to them regarding what they propose to you in hope of their faith; for they will not believe in that. "So if you are" meaning: at a time of times, "in doubt" meaning: even if slight, "about what We have revealed" meaning: by Our greatness, reaching through the intermediary, "to you," in that, "then ask" meaning: because of that doubt, "those who read" meaning: continuously regarding that, "the Book" meaning: the heavenly one from the Jews and Christians, for they are greatly knowledgeable about the correctness of what We have revealed to you. And whoever among them believes or is fair-minded is worthy of increasing in faith regarding that. And when they were some of those who were given the Book in the past, the neighbor established it and said: "Before you," and they are at different stages regarding that news. So do not incline to asking others, and this is the meaning of His saying, the Exalted, confirmed and coming with the letter of expectation, for both matters are in their rightful places: "Indeed, the truth has come to you" meaning: the established truth, its establishment is complete; and it is the enactment of justice regarding them. And He increased it in honor and encouragement with His saying: "from your Lord" meaning: the One who has done good to you by choosing you for that. Thus it was conveyed in the manner of clarification for him without a conjunction. So if it is established that it is the truth, meaning: the established truth at the highest level, it results in the distance from the wavering of whoever receives it. Therefore, it is appropriate to follow it with His saying: "So do not be among the doubters"; He affirmed it because it is true that no one should turn away from it in any way. "Of those who doubt" meaning: those who are heedless of the signs of Allah, "and seek favor for the people of justice"; Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: No, by Allah! He did not doubt even for the blink of an eye nor did he ask anyone of them.
