Commentary
And when He commanded to be patient, which is the result of knowledge, He turned to inform about the response with His saying: ﴿And We passed﴾ meaning: We acted with Our greatness in granting them the act of the contender against the other who is competing with him. And He indicated by attaching the preposition 'bi' to them, that He, glorified and exalted is He, accompanied them, which is a sign of His pleasure with their action. He said: ﴿with the Children of Israel﴾ meaning: Our sincere servant to Us ﴿the sea﴾ indicating that He commanded them to exit from Egypt and fulfilled for them what He promised, so He destroyed Pharaoh and his entourage by their following the path of one who does not know their recklessness and lack of patience. And He saved the Children of Israel by their patience and submission. The shift from the unseen to speaking is due to what is in this passing and its prerequisites and consequences from the manifestations of greatness, the enforcement of commands, and the validity of judgments. And He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the manner of showing the response to the call by His saying, which is caused by the passing: ﴿So he followed them﴾ meaning: the Children of Israel ﴿Pharaoh and his troops﴾ meaning: they pursued them, that is, they carried their souls to follow them, which is the act of walking in their traces. And to follow him - if he preceded him, then he caught up with him. It is said: he followed him in good and followed him in evil. And when this was understood, he stated it clearly, saying: ﴿Out of transgression﴾ meaning: exceeding the truth and showing disdain for them ﴿and aggression﴾ meaning: injustice and exceeding the limit.
And when the doer of that was worthy of returning from the path he took through the difficulties, he was astonished at his persistence, so he said - adding to what you estimate: [and he continued] he persisted in that -: ﴿Until﴾ and when the sight of the sea parting from the places of their walking was a possibility of the water returning to its places and drowning them, he expressed with the tool of realization, saying: ﴿When it overtakes him﴾ meaning: it overcomes him and surrounds him ﴿drowning﴾ meaning: death by water, as Moses asked [that] he would not believe until he sees the painful punishment ﴿He said: I believe﴾ meaning: I established the belief of the caller for me against the denial; then he justified his belief by saying, substituting from 'I believe' in the reading of Hamzah and Al-Kisai with the kasrah, confirming from the intensity of fear: ﴿That indeed﴾ [and] on the estimation of the preposition 'bi' as justification in the reading of the congregation; meaning: acknowledging that he ﴿there is no deity except the one who﴾ and it is permissible that he established ﴿I believe﴾ on ﴿that indeed﴾ and what follows it - that is, ﴿I believe﴾ negating divinity from everything other than whom I have exempted from expressing it or returning from it.
And when the doomed one realized that there is no salvation except through truthfulness, he intended to inform of the utmost of his truthfulness and said: "I have believed"; meaning: I have established the affirmation, acknowledging it. "By it, the Children of Israel"; he specified it in a way that removed any possibility of doubt. Then he said: "And I am of the Muslims"; he repeated the acceptance of what he had been called to, which he had rejected out of arrogance. He expressed what indicated a claim of steadfastness in it, clarifying that he had humbled himself in a way that left no room for that arrogance, and that arrogance did not benefit him due to the loss of its condition. Thus, his humiliation was connected to the disgrace in the Barzakh and what follows it. And indeed, a single instance was sufficient for him when the condition was present. And Allah increased his humiliation by causing despair of success with His saying through the tongue of the state, or Gabriel, blessings be upon him, or the Angel of Death, or others from among the angels, blessings be upon them: "Now"; meaning: Do you respond to what you were called to at this time when responding is of no benefit due to the loss of faith in the unseen, which the name of faith cannot be validly applied except to it? "And you have indeed"; meaning: while you have "disobeyed"; meaning: through disbelief "before"; meaning: throughout all the time of the calling that was before this moment. And the disobedience of the King necessitates being taken and angered, regardless of how it was; so how about when it is through disbelief! "And you were"; meaning: in a natural state "of the corruptors"; meaning: deeply entrenched in corruption and causing corruption.
